Horizon Air Flight Attendants Seek Fair Pay with Mediation
Horizon Air flight attendants are intensifying their push for fair compensation by filing for federal mediation, according to the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA). This move comes after months of unsuccessful negotiations with management, as the flight attendants fight for pay and working conditions that reflect their contributions to the airline.
Horizon Air, a subsidiary of Alaska Airlines, employs flight attendants who perform the same duties as their counterparts at Alaska Airlines. However, these regional workers are paid significantly less, despite providing identical services. The AFA has highlighted that while Horizon’s operations fall under Alaska Airlines’ management, the pay disparity between the two groups remains substantial.
The union argues that the management has not offered meaningful pay increases to address these inequalities. Instead, the airline continues to uphold a two-tiered system that favors mainline employees over regional flight attendants, which the AFA views as an exploitative business model that undermines the value of regional airline workers.
Lisa Davis-Warren, President of Horizon AFA, expressed her frustration in a statement, saying, “Flight Attendants at Horizon Air and in the regional airlines deserve fair compensation. The company needs to recognize the contributions we have made to its continued growth.” She emphasized that the union’s goal is to secure better pay, benefits, and improved scheduling for Horizon flight attendants.
The AFA’s decision to request federal mediation comes after the negotiations have reached an impasse. The next phase will involve the National Mediation Board, which will assign a federal mediator to facilitate discussions between the two parties. This mediator will oversee the negotiations and work to bring about a resolution that addresses the flight attendants’ concerns.
The fight for fair pay and working conditions has gained attention from other regional airline workers who face similar challenges. The AFA believes that securing a favorable resolution for Horizon flight attendants could set a positive precedent for improving the conditions of regional airline workers across the industry.
As the federal mediation process moves forward, Horizon flight attendants remain hopeful that the intervention of a neutral mediator will expedite negotiations and help achieve the compensation they believe they deserve.
