New Airlines Routes to Europe for 2025: Expanding Air Travel Options

Travelers heading to Europe in 2025 will have an array of new nonstop flights to choose from, with major U.S. airlines adding over 35 new routes, including 7,000 additional seats per day across the Atlantic this summer. This marks a 4% increase in capacity compared to 2024 and a 10% gain over 2019, representing a 1.4 million seat increase during the summer months. As European destinations remain highly sought after, Italy stands out as a key beneficiary, with 14 new U.S. routes to Italian cities. Notably, Delta Air Lines is expanding heavily in Italy, with four new routes, making it the largest U.S. carrier in the Italian market. Other major U.S. airlines, including United Airlines, are also adding five new European airports, marking the largest international expansion in the airline’s history. One of the most unique new routes is United Airlines’ service to Nuuk, Greenland, starting June 14 from Newark Liberty International Airport—a first-ever direct commercial flight to Greenland on a U.S. carrier. Additionally, American Airlines is expanding beyond major hubs like New York JFK and Dallas-Fort Worth, with a new nonstop to Athens from Charlotte starting June 5.

European carriers like Aer Lingus and TAP Air Portugal are also adding new U.S. routes. Aer Lingus is launching flights from Dublin to Nashville and Indianapolis, while TAP Air Portugal introduces three new flights, including a weekly nonstop from San Francisco to the Azores. Among Italy’s popular destinations, Rome will receive expanded access from multiple U.S. cities, including Denver, Miami, and Minneapolis via United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta. Sicilian cities like Catania and Palermo will also enjoy new direct connections from cities like Boston, Chicago, and Newark.

Portugal is also gaining momentum, with United Airlines adding new flights to Faro, Madeira, and Lisbon, and TAP Air Portugal expanding to Porto and Terceira in the Azores. These new routes will provide U.S. travelers with direct access to popular Portuguese destinations. Spain will remain a favorite European destination, with Delta offering new seasonal service to Barcelona from Boston and Bilbao from Newark. American Airlines will also introduce a new flight to Madrid from Chicago starting March 30, while JetBlue and Iberia enhance routes between Boston and Madrid.

For those seeking a cooler European experience, Scotland and Denmark will see added service. Delta is adding flights from Minneapolis to Copenhagen, and JetBlue and American Airlines will connect Boston and Philadelphia to Edinburgh. Aer Lingus and Delta are also increasing flights to Dublin from Detroit, Indianapolis, and Nashville. With these expansions, U.S. travelers will have more access than ever to European destinations. The trend also points to a longer travel season, starting earlier than usual in March and continuing well beyond the summer peak, with airlines like Delta and United reporting strong bookings outside of the summer months.

With 7,000 additional seats per day this summer, airlines are expected to compete on prices, offering affordable flights for U.S. travelers heading to Europe. The favorable exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and euro makes this an even more attractive time to travel. As 2025 unfolds, expect more direct flights to popular and off-the-beaten-path European destinations. Whether it’s Italy, Portugal, or Greenland, U.S. airlines are ready to meet the growing demand for European travel, offering travelers more convenience, competition, and opportunities to explore.
