Vienna Airport (VIE) is capitalizing on its strong recovery and expanding network by exploring unserved and underserved routes through Routes 360, the premier digital platform dedicated to route development. With over 31.7 million passengers in 2024—a 7.4% increase from the previous year that has already surpassed pre-pandemic levels—VIE is perfectly positioned to unlock new business opportunities for airline network planners.
Located just 18 km (11 mi.) from Austria’s capital, Vienna Airport serves as a vital hub connecting travelers to more than 195 destinations across the globe. The airport’s impressive network is built on robust partnerships with over 72 airlines, ensuring seamless connectivity and a diverse array of flight options. This extensive network has been further enhanced by a series of recent route expansions that have boosted VIE’s international presence, particularly in the Asian market.
In May 2024, Hainan Airlines relaunched its service to Shenzhen, and by December, the carrier had introduced a new 3X-weekly service to Chengdu. Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) also resumed its year-round Tokyo service in August 2024, strengthening Vienna Airport’s ties to the Asian market. These strategic moves have not only diversified VIE’s route network but have also attracted a growing number of passengers from Asia, contributing to the airport’s overall performance.
Europe and the Middle East have also seen significant improvements in connectivity. SKY Express recently launched a 4X-weekly service to Athens, while Air Arabia began operating 4X-weekly flights to Sharjah starting in December 2024. Looking ahead, EasyJet is set to debut a daily direct service to Milan in March 2025, and Condor is enhancing its Frankfurt offerings with plans to station an aircraft at VIE this summer. Additionally, from June 2025, Singapore Airlines’ subsidiary Scoot will introduce a 3X-weekly service to Singapore, offering travelers smooth onward connections through Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN). With these developments, Vienna Airport is poised to surpass 32 million passengers in 2025.
To accommodate this anticipated growth, VIE is undergoing a major €420 million ($428 million) south terminal expansion, scheduled for completion in 2027. This state-of-the-art project will feature modernized security checks, expanded waiting areas, and new passenger facilities, ensuring that Vienna Airport remains a premier gateway in Europe. The expansion is designed to meet the rising demand and further enhance the passenger experience, supporting VIE’s long-term growth strategy.
As a proud member of Routes 360, Vienna Airport is using the platform to identify and promote new route opportunities. The airport’s profile on Routes 360 highlights a number of unserved routes that represent significant untapped potential for airlines looking to expand their networks. These unserved opportunities include:
