Vertical Aerospace Enters New Era of eVTOL Innovation

UK-based Vertical Aerospace is emerging as a true pioneer in the eVTOL sector, marking a new era of technological and operational breakthroughs. After several past wobbles, the company now boasts renewed momentum with fresh investments and promising flight test developments at its Cotswold Airport base. In recent weeks, Vertical Aerospace secured up to $50 million in committed funding from Mudrick Capital Management and celebrated further impressive flight tests of its VX4 aircraft. These strides, combined with additional funding of $90 million raised on January 24, 2025, have positioned the company for what CEO Stuart Simpson described in December 2024 as its “biggest year yet,” with major technological advances and accelerated piloted testing on the horizon.

Vertical Aerospace does not aspire to be the first eVTOL certified by an aviation regulator; rather, its steady, dedicated approach is winning the confidence of investors. In a market where competitors such as Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation have struggled, Vertical’s thoughtful, measured progress and international team of experts have garnered significant support. With a workforce that is about 50% British and complemented by seasoned engineers and test pilots from Italy, Canada, the United States, and Brazil, the company is building a strong foundation for sustained success.

At its Cotswold Airport testing hub, AeroTime recently witnessed the VX4 up close. The aircraft, designed to carry a single pilot and four passengers at speeds of up to 150 mph, impressed onlookers with its robust build and innovative design. During a high-powered tethered ground run, Chief Test Pilot Simon Davies demonstrated the VX4’s capabilities as all eight propellers came to life in a controlled, exhilarating display of power. Davies, a former military fast-jet test pilot with helicopter experience, noted that the VX4 is “much, much easier than flying a helicopter” due to the reduced operational complexities. He explained that the propellers and battery are the two core elements kept in-house, while major components like the fuselage, wings, and cockpit avionics are supplied by industry giants such as Leonardo, Norco, and Honeywell.

Beyond the flight tests, Vertical Aerospace is investing heavily in its battery development. The recently inaugurated Vertical Energy Centre in Bristol has been hailed as the UK’s most advanced aerospace battery facility. This cutting-edge center supports the design, testing, manufacture, and commercialization of Vertical’s custom-made battery packs for the VX4. Overseen by Operations and Manufacturing Director Ross Crawford, the facility leverages expertise from former employees of McLaren, the European Space Agency, Jaguar Land Rover, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, and Dyson. Crawford emphasized that Vertical Aerospace is focused on high-volume production, stating, “We are not going to be building one of these batteries or 10 of them; we’re going to build them in significant quantity in serious production.” The strategic partnership with Molicel, announced in 2022, further combines Vertical’s proprietary battery pack design with advanced cell technology to meet the unique demands of the VX4.

With steady funding, rigorous flight testing, and a state-of-the-art battery facility, Vertical Aerospace is setting a new benchmark in the eVTOL industry. The company’s blend of engineering excellence, international collaboration, and strategic investment is laying the groundwork for a new era in urban air mobility, one that promises safer, more efficient, and more accessible aerial transportation in the years ahead.
