AirBorneo Acquisition Progresses, Fleet Plans Still Unclear

Sarawak’s Premier, Abang Johari Openg, has confirmed the acquisition of MASwings but remained tight-lipped about the cost and fleet details. The carrier will rebrand as AirBorneo within 18 months, with all assets, including staff and aircraft, transferred under the agreement.
Speaking to DayakDaily, Openg highlighted plans for new ATR aircraft with updated cabin configurations and reassured that the acquisition comes with zero liabilities. “Sarawak is taking over with a fresh start. It’s a good deal,” he said.
The Sarawak government recently signed the deal with Malaysia Aviation Group, but financial specifics remain undisclosed due to commercial sensitivities. While initial plans include flights to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Jakarta, the premier mentioned future expansions to Hong Kong.
Openg revealed the intention to introduce jets for longer routes but provided no details on aircraft types or delivery timelines. The transition strategy involves phased route expansions and operational upgrades.
MASwings currently operates nine ATR72-500s and six DHC-6-400s across 28 routes, including rural air services in Borneo. From Kuching, it offers flights to Limbang, Mukah, and Mulu—services that will continue post-rebranding.
The move to establish AirBorneo aligns with Sarawak’s broader aviation growth strategy, positioning the state as a regional hub while enhancing connectivity with neighboring Southeast Asian markets.
Despite unanswered questions surrounding fleet acquisitions and costs, Sarawak officials emphasize the airline’s potential for economic growth and regional integration.
