Volaris Expands with 30 New Routes Across Americas

Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier Volaris is set to expand its domestic and international network with the launch of 30 new routes in the coming months. This bold expansion strengthens connectivity between Mexico, the U.S., and Central America while offering more travel options for passengers across these key markets.
Among the most anticipated launches is the route linking Querétaro with Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This service, which Volaris last offered in April 2018, will operate three times per week starting July 1, 2025. “We are very, very happy about this new route to Los Angeles,” said Carlos Perera, commercial director of Querétaro International Airport (QRO), during Routes Americas 2025 in Nassau, Bahamas. Perera highlighted the strong business and commercial ties between Querétaro and Los Angeles, noting that many Mexicans travel to LA for various reasons, and that the route will further solidify Querétaro’s ties to the U.S. market.
Eric Friedman, Volaris’ director of network planning and strategy, explained that evolving market conditions have created the right environment for reintroducing the Querétaro-LAX service. “Back in 2018, we stimulated the market quite a bit, but it wasn’t quite enough back then. Since then, the market has grown back to its previous size despite a lack of direct service,” Friedman said. He added that with the robust economic activity in Querétaro, Volaris is confident that the new route will meet and exceed demand.
The expansion plan, which spans from March to July 2025, includes an array of new routes boosting Volaris’ presence in key Mexican cities such as Morelia, Monterrey, and San Luis Potosí. Morelia, in particular, will see a significant boost with five new international routes and three domestic additions, raising the airport’s total Volaris services to 17. These additions will provide passengers with more frequent and varied travel options, further enhancing the connectivity between major urban centers and leisure destinations.
Strengthening its Central American footprint is another cornerstone of Volaris’ strategy. The carrier will launch new services from San José, Costa Rica, to Miami, Orlando, and Tulum. This move complements its existing routes from Costa Rica’s capital to Cancun, Guatemala City, Mexico City Juarez, and San Salvador, making it easier for travelers to explore the region.
Additionally, Volaris is shifting its New York-area operations from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport starting July 1. This strategic change will see the airline serve routes from Newark to Guadalajara and San Salvador, optimizing operations and expanding its market presence on the U.S. East Coast.
Another highlight of the network expansion is the first international service from Aeropuerto Internacional de Tepic-Riviera Nayarit, with a new route to LAX set to begin on July 16.
In January 2025, Volaris carried 2.6 million passengers, although its load factor dipped slightly by 1.5 percentage points year-over-year to 86.6%. President and CEO Enrique Beltranena noted some softness in U.S.-bound VFR traffic due to geopolitical uncertainty following President Trump’s inauguration. “To manage this, we adjusted base fares to stimulate demand and deliver healthy load factors,” he said, adding that this is a temporary market condition that will be closely monitored.
With this comprehensive network expansion, Volaris is poised to offer more travel options, enhanced connectivity, and a stronger presence in key markets, further solidifying its position as a leading ultra-low-cost carrier in the Americas.
