Breeze Airways Establishes Akron-Canton Airport Base

Breeze Airways is expanding its footprint in Ohio by establishing a new base at Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) for the 2025 summer season. This strategic move is designed to support the airline’s rapid growth and meet the surging demand for its services in the region.
The carrier, founded by aviation entrepreneur David Neeleman, announced that at least 61 pilots, flight attendants, and maintenance personnel will be based at CAK. The new base will allow Breeze Airways to station aircraft overnight at the airport, thereby laying a solid foundation for future expansion. “High demand for our services at CAK has made establishing a base here a natural fit,” said Neeleman, Breeze’s CEO. “We will continue to invest in our future growth at CAK, ensuring we can serve our passengers with enhanced convenience and efficiency.”
Breeze Airways first started serving CAK in June 2021, just weeks after the airline was launched. Since then, the carrier has developed a robust network at the airport, operating 10 nonstop routes on a year-round and seasonal basis. These routes connect CAK with popular destinations such as Charleston and Myrtle Beach in South Carolina; several cities in Florida including Ft. Myers, Orlando, Sarasota-Bradenton, and Tampa; as well as Las Vegas, Los Angeles (LAX), Norfolk in Virginia, and Raleigh-Durham in North Carolina. This diverse network not only underscores the airline’s commitment to serving regional markets but also reflects its broader strategy to enhance connectivity and capture more of the leisure travel segment.
For the summer of 2025, Breeze will continue its seasonal service between CAK and LAX. This route, scheduled to begin on May 22, will operate twice weekly using an Airbus A220 aircraft. According to Aviation Week Network’s Tracked Aircraft Utilization tool, Breeze had 35 A220-300s in service as of January 2025, with another aircraft in storage. The use of the Airbus A220 highlights the carrier’s focus on fuel efficiency and modern fleet capabilities as it expands its operations.
At CAK, Breeze Airways faces competition from other low-cost carriers. Notably, leisure-focused Allegiant Air, which also operates 10 routes from the airport, competes directly with Breeze on three routes. Both carriers fly from CAK to Sarasota-Bradenton and Myrtle Beach. Additionally, while Breeze connects CAK with Orlando International Airport, Allegiant serves passengers from CAK to Orlando Sanford Airport. These competitive dynamics underscore the importance of the new base in helping Breeze capture a larger share of the market in the region.
Major legacy carriers also operate from CAK. United Airlines connects CAK to its hub at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, while American Airlines serves its hubs in Charlotte and Washington Reagan National Airport from CAK. This busy mix of operators further emphasizes the strategic importance of Akron-Canton Airport as a gateway for both domestic and international travel.
Breeze Airways’ decision to establish a base at CAK is a testament to its rapid growth and customer demand. By stationing aircraft overnight and expanding its route network, the airline is positioning itself for long-term success. As Breeze continues to invest in its operations, passengers in the greater Akron-Canton region can look forward to more convenient and efficient travel options, solidifying CAK’s role as a key hub in the airline’s network.
