Southwest Airlines to Shut Down Two Satellite FA Bases in Austin and Fort Lauderdale

Southwest Airlines has announced the closure of its two satellite cabin crew bases at Austin-Bergstrom International and Fort Lauderdale International, effective July 1, 2025. This decision is part of the airline’s broader strategy to streamline operations and enhance overall business efficiency.
Opened on a trial basis in 2018, these satellite bases are considerably smaller than Southwest’s primary 12 bases, housing approximately 280 flight attendants combined. With no pilots stationed in these cities, the impact of the closure is confined to the cabin crew, who will be offered relocation opportunities to other main bases across the airline’s network.
In a communication to ch-aviation, Southwest Airlines explained that the consolidation efforts are aimed at maximizing operational efficiency and reliability. “This change will ultimately help strengthen our crew network and support a more reliable operation for our employees and customers,” a spokesperson for the airline stated.
This move comes on the heels of an announcement earlier this year where Southwest disclosed a reduction of 1,750 positions, predominantly within management and leadership roles, anticipated to save the airline approximately $210 million in the current fiscal year.
The closures are part of a comprehensive transformation plan initiated by Southwest following a challenging 2024. This plan includes the initiation of “red-eye” flights, the sale and leaseback of a portion of its Boeing 737-800 fleet, and the introduction of voluntary redundancy packages. These strategic adjustments are in response to a cooperation agreement with activist investor Elliott Investment Management, marking a significant shift in the airline’s operational and financial strategy.
