Etihad Airways has announced a significant new partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, a collaboration set to strengthen connectivity between the Middle East and Africa. This joint venture, which includes a comprehensive codeshare agreement, will open up new opportunities for passengers and cargo operations across both regions. The two carriers have committed to launching new flights that will directly link Abu Dhabi International Airport and Bole Addis Ababa International Airport in Addis Ababa, marking a major milestone in expanding regional networks and increasing travel options.

Under the terms of the new partnership, Ethiopian Airlines is scheduled to commence services from Addis Ababa to Abu Dhabi on July 15, 2025, while Etihad Airways will introduce daily flights to Addis Ababa beginning on October 1, 2025. Ethiopian Airlines will operate the new route using its modern fleet of Boeing 777 and Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, ensuring passengers experience a high level of comfort and reliability. The collaboration is designed not only to offer a seamless travel experience between the two cities but also to enhance the overall connectivity between the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia.

The codeshare agreement, pending regulatory approval, will allow both carriers to coordinate flight schedules, share passenger information, and offer joint booking options. This level of integration means travelers can enjoy a more streamlined journey, with easier connections and access to a broader network of destinations. The expanded partnership will enable Etihad and Ethiopian Airlines to build on their extensive route networks, linking customers to a growing list of destinations across Africa, the Middle East, and beyond.

Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, emphasized the benefits of the joint venture, stating that the new flights between Abu Dhabi and Addis Ababa will connect two major global hubs, offering customers an integrated travel experience. He noted that the partnership not only benefits passengers by providing more flight options and improved connectivity but also sets the stage for further collaborative efforts. Neves mentioned that the agreement paves the way for deeper discussions in areas such as frequent flyer programs, training initiatives, and cargo services. This integrated approach is expected to enhance operational efficiency and drive mutual growth for both airlines.

Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, echoed these sentiments and highlighted the strategic importance of the new service. He explained that launching the new flight to Abu Dhabi marks Ethiopian Airlines’ third destination in the UAE, following established routes to Dubai and Sharjah for cargo. With over 120 weekly passenger and cargo services already connecting Ethiopia to the Middle East and Gulf states, the new route further solidifies Ethiopian Airlines’ commitment to strengthening its global presence. Tasew stressed that the enhanced connectivity will provide customers with more choices and contribute to boosting tourism and economic ties between the regions.

This partnership comes at a time when both carriers are focused on expanding their networks and delivering exceptional travel experiences. By joining forces, Etihad Airways and Ethiopian Airlines are not only addressing the growing demand for seamless international travel but are also reinforcing their positions as leading players in the global aviation market. As regulatory approvals are finalized and the new flights begin service later this year, travelers can look forward to a more connected and convenient travel experience between the Middle East and Africa.
