President Donald Trump has announced that Boeing will develop the U.S. Air Force’s next-generation fighter jet, named the F-47. The aircraft, part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, will represent a significant leap in stealth and combat capabilities.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said the F-47 will deliver “unprecedented power” and be “virtually unseeable” on radar. The name is a nod to Trump being the 47th president of the United States. “The generals picked a title, and it’s a beautiful number,” he added.

Few technical details have been released, but defense analysts expect the F-47 to feature sixth-generation stealth technology. While the cost of the contract remains undisclosed, early reports suggest the development could exceed $20 billion, with overall costs running into the hundreds of billions.

The decision marks a major win for Boeing, which has faced years of scrutiny following the 737 Max crashes, quality issues with the KC-46 tanker, and a recent door plug failure in 2024. The new aircraft will be built at Boeing’s facility in St. Louis.

Following the announcement, Boeing’s stock surged 5%, while rival Lockheed Martin saw its shares fall nearly 7%. Lockheed, which manufactures the F-35, remains the primary provider of current Air Force fighter jets but has received criticism over performance and cost.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the F-47 will reinforce U.S. dominance in air combat and reassure allies of America’s global military leadership.
