Lufthansa to Manage ITA Airways Flights at Frankfurt, Munich

Starting in summer 2025, all ITA Airways flights at Frankfurt and Munich airports will be managed from Lufthansa terminals, the Lufthansa Group announced on March 30, 2025. This integration is part of a broader strategy to consolidate ITA Airways within Lufthansa’s global operations, allowing both ITA and other Lufthansa Group airlines to operate “under one roof” at all the Group’s hubs.

The transition follows an earlier announcement in February 2025, where Lufthansa outlined plans for incorporating ITA Airways into its operations, including consolidating flight handling across major terminals. As part of this shift, ITA Airways will move its operations at Frankfurt Airport from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1, which is already used by Lufthansa and its partners. This change will bring significant benefits to passengers, including shorter transfer times due to the proximity of gates A and B. ITA Airways travelers will also have easy access to the Deutsche Bahn long-distance train station, which connects to the ICE high-speed trains.

At Munich Airport, ITA Airways will relocate from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, as well as the satellite terminal, which is jointly managed by Lufthansa and Munich Airport. This terminal has received five-star ratings from Skytrax, enhancing the passenger experience for ITA Airways customers.

Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, emphasized the advantages for ITA Airways passengers, stating that the integration provides access to the Lufthansa Group’s premium services and extensive worldwide route network. “This integration gives ITA Airways passengers access to the enormous advantages of the Lufthansa Group, with all its premium airlines and a worldwide route network,” Vranckx said. He added that passengers will benefit from more direct access to numerous destinations in Italy.

The integration extends beyond just the terminals. At other Lufthansa Group hubs, including Brussels, Rome, Vienna, and Zurich, all airlines in the Group now operate from the same terminal. In Zurich, for example, passengers can easily transfer between SWISS and ITA Airways, thanks to their check-in counters being placed next to each other.

Additionally, ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group airlines are launching a joint codeshare program, offering over 100 new codeshare connections across Europe. These connections, available for booking as single itineraries, will provide travelers with more options for travel, particularly to Italian destinations like Alghero, Lampedusa, Pantelleria, and Reggio Calabria. Lufthansa Group passengers can also use ITA Airways lounges starting March 30, 2025, while ITA Airways passengers can access the Group’s approximately 130 lounges worldwide.

With these changes, Lufthansa Group and ITA Airways aim to streamline the travel experience for passengers, offering seamless connections and access to a broader range of destinations across Europe and beyond.
