Iberostar Launches BRAIAN: AI for Sustainable Hotels

Share

Iberostar Hotels & Resorts, in collaboration with engineering and technology group Sener, has unveiled BRAIAN, a revolutionary virtual operator powered by artificial intelligence, designed to reduce energy consumption and ensure guest comfort across its global portfolio. As part of the broader Iberostar Wave of Change movement, BRAIAN is a key component in the company’s ambitious strategy to achieve significant climate action goals. With plans to reduce energy consumption by 35 percent and cut scope 1 and 2 emissions by 85 percent by 2030—20 years ahead of industry targets—BRAIAN represents a transformative step towards a more sustainable hospitality model.

The new system, whose name cleverly plays on the words “brain” and “artificial intelligence,” is engineered to predict the energy performance of hotels with remarkable precision. By centralizing and analyzing energy data from various variables across the hotel’s management systems, such as building management systems, property management systems, occupancy figures, and even weather forecasts, BRAIAN is able to optimize operations and anticipate energy needs. This level of sophisticated data integration enables hotel operators to make more informed decisions that not only enhance guest comfort but also lead to substantial energy savings.

BRAIAN has already been deployed in several Iberostar properties, and its impact is set to grow. The system is currently operational in Spanish hotels including Iberostar Waves Royal Andalus in Cádiz, Iberostar Waves Alcudia Park, and Iberostar Selection Playa de Palma in Mallorca. In the near future, BRAIAN will be implemented at the Iberostar Selection Cancun in Mexico, marking its expansion beyond the Iberian Peninsula and further reinforcing Iberostar’s commitment to sustainability across its diverse locations.

Álvaro Sánchez López, Global Director of Sustainability, Integration and Impact at Iberostar Hotels & Resorts, emphasized that BRAIAN is a critical tool in the company’s decarbonization roadmap. He stated that the project underscores Iberostar’s dedication to innovation and sustainability while delivering an excellent guest experience. Sánchez López highlighted how BRAIAN supports the maintenance staff by streamlining energy management and reducing operational costs, which in turn helps the company achieve its environmental objectives and provide superior service.

Guillem Peris, director of the Respira project at Sener, noted that Iberostar has set an ambitious goal to reduce its emissions and transition to a more sustainable model by leveraging advanced technology and data analytics. He expressed satisfaction that Iberostar has trusted Sener’s AI capabilities to bring BRAIAN to fruition, adding that the system represents a tangible realization of the company’s commitment to maximizing operational efficiency in its hotels. Peris explained that BRAIAN not only enhances energy management but also improves the overall customer experience by ensuring a consistently comfortable environment.

By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, Iberostar and Sener are paving the way for a new era of sustainable hospitality. As BRAIAN continues to roll out across more properties, it is poised to become a cornerstone of Iberostar’s efforts to lead the industry in environmental innovation while maintaining the exceptional quality and service that guests have come to expect.
