United Airlines, JetBlue in Talks for Loyalty-Focused Partnership

United Airlines and JetBlue Airways are in discussions to form a partnership aimed at boosting customer connectivity and frequent-flyer benefits, according to a Reuters report citing sources familiar with the matter. The proposed collaboration will not involve schedule coordination or fare-setting, a move designed to avoid regulatory challenges similar to those that led to the dissolution of JetBlue’s previous Northeast Alliance (NEA) with American Airlines.
While the discussions are ongoing and details have yet to be finalized, the partnership would mark a strategic step for JetBlue as it seeks new alliances to strengthen its network and loyalty program offerings. During JetBlue’s Q1 2025 earnings call on April 29, CEO Joanna Geraghty confirmed the airline had been in talks with multiple carriers and expects to announce a new partner by the end of the second quarter.
JetBlue is currently undergoing a business transformation after reporting a USD208 million net loss in Q1. The carrier views partnerships as a vital component of its strategy to drive revenue through loyalty programs and enhanced route connectivity.
United Airlines declined to comment on the potential deal, and JetBlue has yet to issue a formal statement.
Between 2021 and 2023, JetBlue and American Airlines operated the NEA, a partnership later blocked by regulators. JetBlue has since ruled out pursuing a similar alliance. Meanwhile, American Airlines has filed a lawsuit seeking repayment from JetBlue following the NEA’s termination.
United CEO Scott Kirby recently reiterated the airline’s interest in expanding its presence at New York JFK but ruled out acquiring another airline to do so.
