Nigeria’s Enugu Airport Reopens Early After Runway Repairs

Nigeria’s Enugu Airport resumed operations on April 28, 2025, after the federal government completed emergency runway repairs ahead of schedule. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had closed the airport on April 22 due to a critical asphalt rupture on the runway, initially targeting a reopening date of May 6.
The six-day closure disrupted operations for several domestic and international carriers, including Air Peace, Ibom Air, United Nigeria Airlines, and Ethiopian Airlines. Affected flights were rerouted to other Nigerian airports, impacting schedules and passenger connections to key destinations such as Lagos, Abuja, and Addis Ababa.
FAAN said the rapid repairs were prioritized due to the airport’s importance in connecting the southeastern region to Nigeria’s major cities and international hubs. Enugu serves as a key gateway for both business and leisure travelers in the region.
Airlines have now resumed regular schedules, with domestic services already operating and international flights expected to follow shortly. Ethiopian Airlines, which connects Enugu with Addis Ababa, is among the international carriers expected to restore full operations in the coming days.
The early reopening of the airport has been widely welcomed by aviation stakeholders and passengers. FAAN has assured that the runway is now fully safe for operations and meets all regulatory standards following the repairs.
Enugu Airport, officially known as Akanu Ibiam International Airport, plays a vital role in Nigeria’s aviation network and is one of the few airports in the southeast with international flight connectivity.
