Middle East Missile Threats, Airspace Closures Strain Airlines

Global airlines are facing mounting operational challenges due to expanding conflict zones, missile threats, and frequent airspace closures, particularly across the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and parts of Africa. These disruptions are forcing carriers to reroute flights, leading to rising costs, longer travel times, and strained safety protocols.

The resurgence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and rising tensions between India and Pakistan have created unpredictable flight conditions. Airlines are navigating risks such as GPS jamming, drone activity, and missile strikes, with airspace closures becoming increasingly common. A Delta executive noted that more than half of the countries on a typical Europe-Asia flight path now require individual risk assessments before each flight.

Guy Murray of TUI Airline emphasized that unpredictability in flight planning increases costs significantly. At the same time, Singapore Airlines has altered its Europe-bound routes multiple times in the past year to avoid high-risk zones, including Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan.

In April 2024, reciprocal drone attacks between Iran and Israel prompted airlines to divert through alternative corridors. The situation worsened in May as India and Pakistan closed their airspace to each other, further complicating regional navigation.

Recent fatal incidents, such as the Azerbaijan Airlines crash in Kazakhstan and a cargo plane downed in Sudan, highlight civil aviation’s vulnerability in conflict zones. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is calling for stronger global coordination and information sharing to protect commercial aviation from evolving threats.

IATA maintains that airlines should assess risks, but pilot unions warn that commercial pressures could compromise safety decisions in volatile regions.
