The iconic Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, California has completed a sweeping $550 million restoration, marking the largest and most comprehensive renovation in the property’s storied history. A crown jewel of Victorian-era architecture and a National Historic Landmark, the hotel has undergone an extensive revitalization that honors its 136-year legacy while introducing modern comforts for today’s guests.

Led by Marriott International and Blackstone Real Estate, the restoration brings new life to the entire resort, including the main entry and drive, front porch, lobby, Victorian guest rooms, garden courtyard, and historic event spaces, such as the Crown Room, Cornet Room, and Ocean Ballroom. The project was executed in collaboration with design and preservation experts from Wimberly Interiors, WATG, GSB Inc., Burton Studios, and Heritage Architecture & Planning.

“From its earliest days, Hotel del Coronado has been a pioneer, continuously redefining the resort experience,” said JP Oliver, Managing Director of Hotel del Coronado. “After this transformative journey, we are proud to set a new benchmark for resort excellence and continue exceeding expectations for a new era of guests and visitors.”

Among the highlights are the newly renovated Victorian guest rooms, which retain their historic charm with deep wood tones and brightened color palettes, while introducing modern enhancements. Bathrooms now feature checkerboard marble flooring, vanities modeled after antique washstands, and upgraded fixtures for enhanced comfort and elegance.

The resort’s event venues have also been meticulously restored. The Crown Room, famous for its original sugar pine ceiling, and the Ocean Ballroom, with its rich woodwork and historic charm, now offer state-of-the-art event technology while preserving the architectural details that have welcomed generations of guests.

Two new dining venues have debuted as part of the restoration.

  • Nobu Del Coronado, the first Nobu restaurant in a beachfront hotel, offers signature Japanese-Peruvian cuisine and California-inspired dishes like Tai Sweet Shiso. With 3,700 square feet of indoor-outdoor oceanfront space, it’s a destination in itself.
  • Veranda, a tribute to the hotel’s original 1,800-foot wraparound porch, serves locally sourced, classic American cuisine in a setting that recalls the resort’s earliest days.

The Victorian Garden courtyard has also been returned to its original layout, complete with restored pergolas, historic walkways, and the return of the Naiad Queen Fountain, which last appeared on the property in 1912. The landscaping features bromeliads, camellias, and hydrangeas—plants popular during the Victorian period.

Hotel del Coronado is part of Hilton’s Curio Collection and LXR Hotels & Resorts, aligning it with a global portfolio of distinctive, handpicked luxury properties. With this restoration, the hotel not only safeguards its history but also enhances its appeal as a modern luxury resort, blending heritage with innovation for new generations of travelers.
