Ethiopian Airlines has signed a purchase agreement for two new Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft from De Havilland Canada (DHC), marking the introduction of the latest Twin Otter variant into the airline’s fleet. The announcement was made on June 17, 2025, at the Paris Air Show 2025.

The acquisition supports Ethiopian Airlines’ strategy to expand regional connectivity and serve remote and underserved communities across Ethiopia and East Africa. With its proven short takeoff and landing (STOL) performance, rugged design, and enhanced avionics, the Twin Otter Classic 300-G is well suited for challenging terrains and areas with limited airport infrastructure.

“We are honoured and excited to welcome Ethiopian Airlines to the Twin Otter Classic 300-G customer family and see the Twin Otter once again fly in Ethiopian Airline livery,” said Ryan DeBrusk, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at De Havilland Canada. “Ethiopian Airlines has a long-standing reputation for excellence in aviation, and their selection of the 300-G demonstrates their confidence in the aircraft’s capabilities to support vital regional connectivity, tourism, and development missions.”

The Twin Otter has a long-standing legacy in short-haul regional aviation and is widely recognized for its versatility, reliability, and mission flexibility. The new 300-G variant builds on that legacy, integrating modern cockpit systems and updated avionics while maintaining the rugged capabilities that make it ideal for multifaceted operations in hard-to-reach destinations.

Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, highlighted the strategic importance of the aircraft to the airline’s diversified mission set. “We selected the 300-G for its proven performance in difficult environments and its modern enhancements that align with our operational and sustainability goals,” Tasew said. “The aircraft will be configured with additional equipment for multi-function missions, including air ambulance, airport calibration, and charter services.”

De Havilland Canada emphasized that the Twin Otter’s dual passenger-cargo configurations will allow Ethiopian Airlines to support humanitarian relief, medical transport, and commercial flights, making the aircraft an ideal tool for both public and private missions in remote areas.

The introduction of the Twin Otter Classic 300-G to Ethiopian’s fleet marks a return to the iconic aircraft type for the airline. The carrier previously operated earlier Twin Otter models and now aims to enhance its domestic and regional connectivity, especially in rugged and high-altitude environments where traditional commercial aircraft cannot operate efficiently.

This agreement reflects growing demand across Africa for versatile regional aircraft that can support development, tourism, and emergency response. With rising focus on sustainable aviation and infrastructure-light operations, aircraft like the 300-G offer a cost-effective and flexible solution.

As one of Africa’s leading carriers, Ethiopian Airlines continues to expand its operational reach and mission capabilities, reinforcing its role in connecting remote regions and supporting national development goals. The Twin Otter 300-G will play a key role in that vision, contributing to both economic growth and essential services delivery across the continent.
