India Probes Air India Crash, Black Box Data Under Analysis

India’s civil aviation ministry confirmed on Thursday June 26 that efforts are underway to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the fatal Air India crash earlier this month, which killed 260 people. The investigation aims to identify contributing factors to what is now considered the world’s worst aviation disaster in a decade.
The London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 of the 242 people on board, as well as additional victims on the ground.
Recovery crews located the aircraft’s black boxes—the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR)—in the days following the crash. One was found on a rooftop near the crash site on June 13, while the other was recovered from the debris on June 16.
Both recorders were transported to Delhi, where a team led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has begun analyzing the data. According to the ministry, the Crash Protection Module (CPM), which safeguards critical flight data during impact, was successfully retrieved and the memory module accessed. The AAIB, along with technical experts from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), began analyzing the data on June 24–25, 2025.
“The analysis of CVR and FDR data is currently underway,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that this data could provide vital insight into the aircraft’s performance and pilot communications before the crash.
The tragedy has also renewed focus on aviation safety in India. The country’s aviation regulator recently reported recurring technical defects at Mumbai and Delhi airports and cited Air India for multiple safety violations. These include operating aircraft with overdue emergency equipment checks and pilot duty scheduling issues.
Air India stated it has implemented the regulator’s directives, is accelerating the verification of maintenance records, and remains committed to complying with all safety protocols.
