JAL Offers Free Domestic Flights Across Japan

Japan Airlines is giving international travelers a compelling reason to explore more of Japan beyond Tokyo. Through an ongoing promotion with no announced end date, passengers flying into Japan on a JAL international flight can book additional domestic flights to any of the airline’s 64 in-country destinations at no extra cost.

This offer applies to travelers from select countries including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Singapore, India, and several others. The key condition: the international and domestic flights must be booked together on JAL’s official website. Eligible passengers can take advantage of generous baggage allowances—two checked bags up to 50 pounds in economy and premium economy, and three bags up to 70 pounds in business and first class.

While travelers from some countries, such as the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and China, will still face a $100 stopover fee if they stay longer than 24 hours in their arrival city (usually Tokyo), passengers from other eligible nations won’t be charged this fee. That makes it an attractive opportunity for international tourists to visit destinations like Kyoto, Hokkaido, or Okinawa without incurring high domestic travel costs.

However, it’s not always a guaranteed savings. One traveler noted that while she was considering the promotion for a multi-city trip from Tokyo to Hokkaido and Hiroshima, the total cost of flying with JAL—about $500 more on the international leg—cancelled out the domestic flight savings. Still, with JAL’s high service standards, many travelers may find the extra value worthwhile.

The promotion is also part of a broader strategy to distribute visitor traffic across the country. Japan welcomed a record 36.9 million tourists in 2024, and with a national goal of reaching 60 million by 2030, concerns about overtourism are growing. Popular destinations like Kyoto and Mount Fuji have already imposed fines and visitor caps to manage overwhelming crowds. JAL’s initiative encourages exploration of less-traveled regions, helping to ease pressure on busy metro areas.

Japan Airlines, often ranked among the world’s best airlines, brings more to the table than free flights. Business class travelers enjoy fine dining, French-designed amenity kits, and signature Japanese hospitality. With the country’s tourism infrastructure under strain and its regional beauty often overlooked, this offer could prove a win-win for both travelers and Japan’s tourism planners.
