Air Algérie has placed an order for 16 ATR72-600 turboprops to support the launch of its new regional subsidiary, Domestic Airlines. The new aircraft, equipped with Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127XT engines, will seat 72 passengers and begin arriving in 2026, with final deliveries scheduled by 2028.

Air Algérie CEO Hamza Benhamouda stated that the ATR72-600s are ideal for connecting Algeria’s remote and underserved regions, enhancing national connectivity and supporting development goals through efficient regional air service.

As part of a broader strategy, Air Algérie will focus on expanding its international operations from Algiers, while Domestic Airlines will take over domestic routes. The new carrier is expected to begin operations in July 2025 and will concentrate on serving Algeria’s southern cities, many of which currently have limited air access.

Domestic Airlines will be built around Tassili Airlines, a regional operator that Air Algérie recently acquired from the state-owned Sonatrach Group. It remains unclear whether the new airline will operate under Tassili’s existing air operator certificate or function as a separate entity.

According to ch-aviation data, Air Algérie currently operates a regional fleet of twelve ATR72-500s and three ATR72-600s. The ATR72-500s have an average age of 21.2 years, while the -600s average 10.2 years. Tassili Airlines operates a fleet of eight Beech 1900Ds, four DHC-8-Q200s, and four DHC-8-Q400s.

The fleet renewal and domestic network strategy mark a significant step in modernizing Algeria’s aviation infrastructure and improving regional accessibility.
