Virgin Atlantic is shifting toward a more premium-heavy configuration across its new-generation aircraft, announcing major cabin upgrades for its Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A330-900neo fleets.

The UK-based carrier plans to increase Upper Class (business) seats on its 787-9s from 31 to 44 and boost premium economy seats from 35 to 56. Economy seating will drop from 192 to 127. The 17 Boeing 787-9s in the fleet will begin retrofitting in 2028, with the final aircraft completed by 2030.

For its A330-900neos, Virgin Atlantic will expand business class seating from 32 to 48 and premium economy from 46 to 56, while reducing economy seats from 184 to 128. The first A330-900s with the new layout are set to arrive in 2026. The airline currently operates eight of the type, with 16 additional deliveries expected. It has not confirmed whether existing A330neos will be retrofitted.

Both aircraft types will feature the upgraded Retreat Suite in business class—offering enhanced privacy, space, and in-seat amenities. The 787-9s will include eight enlarged business class seats, while the A330-900s will have six.

Virgin Atlantic’s overall fleet also includes six A330-300s, which are being phased out, and twelve Airbus A350-1000s.

The move reflects the airline’s strategy to cater to rising demand for premium travel, especially on transatlantic routes. By investing in cabin enhancements, Virgin Atlantic aims to differentiate its product and boost yields amid intensifying competition in the long-haul market.
