Malaysia Airlines Doubles A330neo Order to 40 Jets

Malaysia Aviation Group has confirmed an order for 20 additional Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, doubling its original commitment to 40 jets as part of its ongoing fleet modernization strategy. The order builds on the group’s 2022 agreement, which initially included 10 aircraft purchased directly from Airbus and 10 leased through Avolon. Four A330neos are already flying under Malaysia Airlines, operating routes to Melbourne, Auckland, and Bali from Kuala Lumpur.
The announcement was timed with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Paris, where French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the expanded order as a milestone in EU-Asia aviation cooperation. The latest deal supports MAG’s long-term goal of transitioning to a more fuel-efficient and passenger-friendly widebody fleet to serve its international network.
Deliveries of the new aircraft are scheduled to start in 2029 and continue through 2031. MAG Group Managing Director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail emphasized that the A330neo offers an ideal blend of range, efficiency, and onboard comfort to support Malaysia Airlines’ growth and competitiveness in key long-haul markets. He also underlined the aircraft’s role in supporting MAG’s broader sustainability and customer experience goals.
Airbus also responded positively to the announcement, with Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP of Sales for Commercial Aircraft, stating that the repeat order reflects continued confidence in the A330neo’s performance. The expanded order positions Malaysia Airlines to bolster its presence in growing markets across Southeast Asia, China, India, and Australasia, reinforcing its ambition to be a leading international carrier in the region.
