Wizz Air Abu Dhabi to Cease Operations by September 2025

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will officially cease operations on September 1, 2025, according to a statement from parent company Wizz Air Holdings. The airline cited engine reliability issues in harsh climate conditions, ongoing geopolitical instability, and regulatory barriers as key factors in the decision.
The low-cost carrier, a joint venture between Wizz Air Holdings and Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company, began operations in January 2021 after receiving its air operator certificate from the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority in October 2020.
“This was a difficult decision, but the right one under the current circumstances,” said Wizz Air CEO József Váradi. “Supply chain challenges, limited market access, and regional volatility have made it increasingly unsustainable to pursue our growth goals in the UAE.”
The announcement comes shortly after Wizz Air Abu Dhabi cut nearly one-third of its network in the UAE, signaling mounting operational pressures. The airline currently operates 25 routes from Abu Dhabi with a fleet of eight A321-200s and four A321neo aircraft.
Wizz Air Holdings now plans to shift focus back to Europe, particularly central and eastern regions, as part of a strategic realignment.
While Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will shut down, other Wizz Air subsidiaries will continue flying to the UAE capital during the IATA winter 2025-26 season. Wizz Air Malta will maintain service on the Vienna–Abu Dhabi route, while flights from Budapest, Kraków, and Katowice will be operated by Wizz Air’s European arms, according to ch-aviation data.
