Madagascar Airlines Undecided on CEO Thierry de Bailleul’s Future

Madagascar Airlines has confirmed that no final decision has been made regarding the renewal of CEO Thierry de Bailleul’s contract, which is set to expire on July 31, 2025. The airline’s board of directors issued a statement on July 15, clarifying that discussions are ongoing and recent media reports suggesting his term has ended are inaccurate.

“As of today, the matter of a possible renewal of this mandate is still under review. No final decision has been made,” the board stated, rejecting claims made by outlets like Africa Intelligence and Midi-Madagasikara.

Despite the uncertainty, the airline reassured stakeholders that it remains fully committed to its World Bank-backed “Phénix 2030” recovery strategy. The board emphasized continued progress in service quality, operational efficiency, and digital modernization.

The airline is also pressing forward with key initiatives, including fleet renewal, international partnerships, and transforming Antananarivo into a regional hub. These programs remain unaffected by the current leadership discussions.

In a recent interview with ch-aviation, de Bailleul expressed optimism about the airline’s financial turnaround. He noted that Madagascar Airlines is awaiting a decision on the second tranche of a $65 million World Bank support package, having already received $25 million.

The airline expects to post a modest profit in 2025, aided by improved aircraft utilization and a new productivity agreement with its pilots. Madagascar Airlines currently operates five aircraft: four ATR72-500s and one ATR72-600. The company continues to face challenges in sourcing new aircraft amid global supply chain constraints.
