A Brentwood man is facing 28 criminal charges, including 23 felonies, for allegedly impersonating a firefighter and pointing a high-powered laser at aircraft during the Los Angeles wildfires. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced the charges against 46-year-old Steve Farzam, who is accused of endangering public safety over a span of more than a year.

On February 21, Farzam allegedly aimed a powerful blue laser at multiple aircraft, including law enforcement helicopters, commercial planes, and AIR7, ABC7’s news chopper. ABC7 reporter Chris Christi, who was onboard AIR7 that night, described the incident as “frightening,” noting the intense brightness of the laser filled the cockpit.

Farzam is also accused of impersonating a firefighter during the Palisades Fire on January 16, gaining unauthorized access to restricted zones by posing as an arson investigator. Authorities say he interfered with emergency operations on multiple occasions.

During a search of Farzam’s Brentwood residence, investigators found several vehicles, including a 1986 fire truck bearing the name of the “Santa Muerte Fire Department”—a fictitious agency. The truck showed signs of fire damage and was towed from the scene.

Farzam pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on Thursday July 17 and is currently being held without bail. If convicted on all charges, he faces up to 23 years and 10 months in prison. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 28.

Prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing and involves multiple agencies, including the FBI.
