South Africa’s FlySafair Adjusts Schedules Ahead of Strike

FlySafair has adjusted its flight schedules in preparation for a potential pilots’ strike, which could begin as early as July 21. The South African low-cost carrier said it anticipates no flight disruptions as it proactively reshuffles operations to maintain service continuity.
The airline confirmed that a formal notice of strike action from the Solidarity union and the pilot union could be issued at any time starting July 17. Under South African labor law, industrial action may commence 72 hours after the notice is delivered.
The move follows the issuance of a strike certificate by South Africa’s Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) on July 17, formally authorizing the unions to proceed with industrial action. The labor dispute stems from three months of failed negotiations regarding improved employment conditions for FlySafair pilots.
FlySafair had offered a 5.7% salary increase along with additional compensation adjustments, but the proposal was rejected by most Solidarity members. The union stated that the relationship between management and pilots has deteriorated significantly.
Further unrest could be sparked by unresolved concerns about a new shift roster and ongoing wage talks involving cabin crew, Solidarity warned.
FlySafair Chief Marketing Officer Kirby Gordon emphasized that while the airline respects its employees’ right to strike, it remains committed to constructive negotiations. The company aims to balance employee satisfaction with long-term business sustainability as it navigates the labor dispute.
FlySafair continues to operate its regular services across South Africa, assuring passengers that contingency plans are in place.
