Firefly Moves Boeing 737s to Kuala Lumpur International

Malaysia’s Firefly will shift its Boeing 737-800 jet operations from Kuala Lumpur Subang to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) starting August 19, 2025. The move comes as part of a strategic realignment by parent company Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) to optimize resources and enhance connectivity following AirAsia’s exit from Subang.
Firefly will progressively launch jet services from KUL to eight destinations, including Tawau, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Singapore Changi, Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, Kuala Terengganu, and Sibu, with full implementation expected by September 3, 2025.
While jet services shift to KUL, Firefly will continue to operate ATR72-500 turboprops from Subang to domestic destinations such as Alor Setar, Langkawi, and Johor Bahru, as well as Singapore Seletar.
MAG Managing Director Izham Ismail stated that the move will allow Firefly to scale its jet operations more efficiently and leverage shared services such as engineering, ground handling, and catering at the main international hub. The relocation also positions Firefly alongside sister airline Malaysia Airlines, which already operates 69 routes out of KUL.
Currently, Firefly only operates one jet route from KUL to Penang. This expansion marks a significant shift in the airline’s network strategy.
Following Firefly’s jet exit, Batik Air Malaysia will be the only scheduled jet operator remaining at Subang Airport. Batik Air’s CEO, Chandran Rama Muthy, affirmed the airline’s commitment to Subang, citing its convenience for point-to-point travel in Kuala Lumpur.
According to ch-aviation data, Firefly’s fleet includes five Boeing 737-800s and nine ATR72-500s.
