Spirit Adds First New International Routes Since Bankruptcy

Spirit Airlines will launch two new international routes from its Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) base this winter, marking its first overseas expansion since emerging from Chapter 11 restructuring in March 2025. The additions—Belize City, Belize, and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands—bring the total number of new destinations in 2025 to seven.
Service to Belize’s Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) begins Nov. 21, operating three times weekly with Airbus A320-family aircraft. Belize Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler said the route will improve connectivity for both leisure travelers and the Belizean diaspora.
Flights to Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) in Grand Cayman start Dec. 4, also at three weekly frequencies. Both routes will be exclusive to Spirit.
These launches follow a series of domestic additions in 2025, all linked to FLL. In June, Spirit began flying from Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Columbia, South Carolina, to Fort Lauderdale, Newark (EWR), and Orlando (MCO). Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) joins Aug. 14 with service to EWR, followed by FLL, Nashville, and Detroit in October. Macon, Georgia, will see twice-weekly FLL flights starting Oct. 16.
The carrier will also debut a short 145-mile FLL–Key West route on Nov. 6, operating four times weekly before going daily on Dec. 16. This service will cut travel time for island residents and connect them to Spirit’s wider network, which will exceed 100 peak-day departures from FLL by year-end.
The expansion underscores Spirit’s post-restructuring strategy to grow its domestic and international footprint while rebuilding its market presence.
