Joby Aviation and ANA Holdings have announced a joint venture to launch electric air taxi services in Japan, beginning in Tokyo. The partnership will introduce a fleet of more than 100 Joby electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, designed to ease urban congestion and provide fast, sustainable transport across densely populated areas.

The venture will not only focus on operating the air taxi service but also on building the infrastructure needed for its success. Plans include the development of vertiports, charging networks, and pilot training programs to support large-scale deployment. By establishing a complete ecosystem, the companies aim to position Japan as a leader in advanced air mobility.

Toyota Motor Corporation, already a key investor and partner in Joby, will play a central role in supporting this rollout. Toyota’s experience in manufacturing, logistics, and mobility is expected to accelerate the integration of eVTOL operations into Japan’s transportation network.

The service is expected to initially connect airports with city centers and expand to cover popular destinations in and around Tokyo. Over time, Joby and ANA aim to extend the network nationwide, offering an alternative to congested road and rail systems.

This initiative supports Japan’s broader strategy to embrace advanced air mobility as a solution for urban and regional transportation challenges. By combining Joby’s eVTOL technology with ANA’s aviation expertise and Toyota’s industrial capabilities, the partnership represents a significant step toward sustainable, next-generation mobility in Japan.
