Alaska Airlines Orders Boeing 787-10s to Boost Global Ambitions

Alaska Air Group is charting a bold new course with plans to introduce Boeing’s largest Dreamliner, the 787-10, into its fleet. The move underscores the airline’s growing international ambitions as it reshapes its long-haul strategy following its merger with Hawaiian Airlines.

Hawaiian Airlines had originally ordered the mid-sized 787-9, but Alaska is converting five of those orders to the larger 787-10. Known for its spacious cabin, efficiency, and seating for more than 300 passengers, the 787-10 provides a major capacity upgrade that makes it well-suited for high-demand international routes.

Seattle will serve as the hub for Alaska’s Dreamliner operations, positioning the city as a gateway for transpacific and transatlantic travel. While the 787-10 offers slightly less range than the 787-9, it can still reach key destinations in Asia and Europe, including Tokyo, Seoul, London, and Frankfurt.

The carrier is also enhancing its onboard product to appeal to both leisure and corporate travelers. The new Dreamliners will feature lie-flat business class seats, a dedicated premium economy cabin, and upgraded main cabin seating, creating a premium experience to rival legacy U.S. carriers.

With four 787-10s on order and seven 787-9s still in the pipeline, Alaska Air Group is signaling its intent to expand internationally with larger, more efficient widebody aircraft. This strategy reflects a wider trend among U.S. airlines, which are increasingly betting on next-generation jets to capture growing demand for global travel.

For Alaska, the addition of the 787-10 is more than just a fleet upgrade—it’s a declaration of its intent to compete on the world stage.

Alaska Air Group is the holding company that owns Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Horizon Air. It is a major American airline holding company, based in SeaTac, Washington, that serves over 140 destinations across North America and the Pacific.
