LA Olympics Could Test eVTOL Air Taxi Future

Archer Aviation is positioning its Midnight electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft as a showcase for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, aiming to demonstrate how advanced air mobility can reshape urban transport. The company envisions using the event to shuttle athletes, officials, and spectators between Olympic venues in less than 10 minutes, bypassing the city’s notorious traffic.
The Midnight aircraft is designed for short, high-frequency trips with four passenger seats and a pilot, combining low noise, zero emissions in flight, and rapid turnaround times. Archer hopes to use the global stage of the Olympics to highlight the viability of eVTOLs as sustainable alternatives to conventional urban transport.
However, industry experts caution that scaling up operations by 2028 will require overcoming substantial hurdles. Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration remains one of the biggest challenges, with eVTOL regulations still evolving. Building the necessary infrastructure, including vertiports and charging systems, will also demand heavy investment and regulatory approvals.
Archer has already secured partnerships with United Airlines and regional stakeholders to integrate its aircraft into existing air networks, signaling strong commercial interest. Still, analysts note that demonstrating safe, reliable, and large-scale operations within three years will be a major test for the company and the emerging eVTOL sector.
If successful, the LA Olympics could serve as a proving ground for electric air taxis, helping to accelerate public acceptance and pave the way for broader adoption of advanced air mobility across the U.S. and beyond.
