Malta’s Melita Airways Prepares King Air B200 Launch

Maritime entrepreneur Pierre Balzan has revealed plans to launch Melita Airways, a new Malta-based air cargo and charter carrier under the ownership of Melita Marine Group. The start-up is recruiting crew to operate a Beechcraft King Air B200, which will be based at Malta International Airport.
Balzan confirmed the company will initially focus on spare parts delivery, particularly for Rolls-Royce and MTU engines, alongside cargo, charter, and air ambulance operations in the Mediterranean. While further details are expected in an upcoming press release, the company has already begun staffing preparations.
Currently, Melita Airways does not hold an air operator’s certificate (AOC). A Transport Malta spokeswoman confirmed no application has yet been submitted. However, the airline is moving ahead with its recruitment plans as it works toward regulatory approvals.
The King Air B200, a versatile twin turboprop, is often used for both passenger and cargo missions, making it a suitable choice for Melita’s multi-role operational plans. The aircraft will allow the start-up to establish a niche presence in the region by combining specialized logistics with air ambulance capabilities.
Balzan is well established in the maritime sector as founder and managing director of Melita Marine Group, a company specializing in superyacht maintenance, repair, and engineering. He also heads Melita Power Diesel, the official distributor of MTU engines in Malta, Greece, and Cyprus.
The launch of Melita Airways marks a strategic expansion of Balzan’s business interests into aviation, with the company seeking to bridge marine and air logistics across the Mediterranean.
