American Airlines Expands Safety Edge With ADS-B In

American Airlines now operates the world’s largest fleet of aircraft equipped with ADS-B In technology, positioning the carrier as an industry leader in safety and efficiency. More than 300 Airbus A321s in American’s fleet are already outfitted with the system, with nearly 150 additional A321neo aircraft on order that will also feature this advanced equipment.

ADS-B, or Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast, transmits GPS-based position, altitude and speed data from aircraft to air traffic controllers (ADS-B Out). ADS-B In enables aircraft to receive that same information from nearby planes, giving pilots a real-time, enhanced view of surrounding traffic. This capability improves situational awareness, allows for more precise aircraft separation and helps streamline airspace usage.

American selected ACSS to supply its A321 fleet with SafeRoute+ technology, which integrates ADS-B In data directly into cockpit displays. This allows crews to better manage spacing and respond proactively to changing traffic patterns, adding another layer of safety beyond existing systems.

The airline worked closely with the Federal Aviation Administration on two successful ADS-B In trials. At Dallas–Fort Worth TRACON, American’s A321 flights operated more efficiently in low-visibility conditions with fewer missed approaches. At the Albuquerque ARTCC, ADS-B In allowed aircraft approaching Phoenix Sky Harbor to be spaced at precise intervals, showing the potential for a 25% capacity increase at scale.

American says these results lay the groundwork for a modernized air traffic control system and underscore its commitment to adopting technologies that enhance both safety and operational efficiency.
