Spirit Airlines Exits 11 U.S. Markets Amid Restructuring

Spirit Airlines will discontinue service at 11 U.S. airports starting the week of October 2, 2025, as the ultra-low-cost carrier restructures under its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy in less than a year. The affected airports include Albuquerque, Birmingham, Boise, Chattanooga, Columbia (SC), Oakland, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego and San José. Spirit also confirmed it will no longer launch planned service at Macon Regional, which had been scheduled for October 16.

The airline said the cuts are part of its efforts “to transform our business and position Spirit for long-term success,” focusing instead on its strongest-performing markets. Data from ch-aviation shows that most of the discontinued routes were connected to key Spirit hubs such as Las Vegas Harry Reid, Fort Lauderdale, New York Newark, Orlando, Detroit and Los Angeles. Las Vegas will see the largest number of route losses, with eight of the dropped cities previously tied to that hub.

Spirit filed for Chapter 11 protection on August 29 as it seeks to renegotiate aircraft leases and reduce its fleet. The carrier currently operates 214 Airbus jets, including A320-200s, A320neo models, A321-200s and A321neo aircraft.

Industry analysts view the retrenchment as a bid to stabilize finances and improve operational efficiency while concentrating capacity where demand and profitability are strongest. By scaling back weaker markets, Spirit aims to shore up its core network and reposition itself for a more sustainable future in the highly competitive U.S. low-cost sector.
