Hungary Airlines Launches First Mainland China Route

Hungary Airlines has made its debut in the mainland Chinese market with the launch of a new service between Budapest and Zhengzhou on September 4. The route marks a strategic expansion for the carrier, which already serves Hong Kong and is seeking to strengthen its presence in China’s fast-growing air cargo market.
According to Flightradar24 data, the China-bound leg operates nonstop from Budapest, while the return flight includes a stopover at Almaty International Airport. The airline will operate five weekly rotations on the route, focusing primarily on transporting e-commerce goods between Europe and China.
The service aligns with Hungary Airlines’ broader growth plans in Asia. Chief Operating Officer Gabor Talabos recently revealed the carrier is evaluating additional Chinese destinations, including a potential route between Budapest and Hangzhou.
Currently, Hungary Airlines operates a single 2014-vintage Airbus A330-200F (HA-LHU) but plans to expand its fleet with two Boeing 777-300(ERSF)s under an ACMI contract with Air Atlanta Europe. These widebody freighters are expected to be deployed on the Zhengzhou route to meet growing demand for cross-border e-commerce and express cargo.
Industry analysts say the move positions Hungary Airlines to tap into China’s booming logistics and e-commerce trade while bolstering Budapest’s role as a regional cargo hub. By expanding into mainland China and adding high-capacity aircraft, the airline is taking a significant step toward diversifying its network and strengthening its competitiveness in the global airfreight market.
