Virgin Australia Trials In-Cabin Pets on Select Flights

Virgin Australia is introducing a limited pilot program allowing small pets to travel in the cabin, marking a first for the airline and a major shift in its domestic travel policy. Beginning October 16, the trial will run through January on select routes from Melbourne to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Under the program, up to four cats or dogs weighing under 8 kilograms will be permitted per flight, giving pet owners new flexibility when traveling.
The initiative aims to address one of the biggest challenges faced by travelers with pets—finding reliable care or boarding during trips. By offering an in-cabin option, Virgin Australia hopes to make domestic travel more seamless for pet-owning customers and align with similar policies in other global markets.
Pets must remain in approved carriers that fit under the seat throughout the journey, ensuring safety and minimizing disruption to other passengers. The airline has also put in place measures to manage allergies and maintain cabin cleanliness, including enhanced cleaning protocols and strict rules on pet containment.
While many pet owners have welcomed the move, some concerns have been raised about potential interactions between animals on board and the impact on passenger comfort. Virgin Australia says it will closely monitor customer feedback and operational performance during the trial to determine whether to expand or adjust the program. If successful, the initiative could pave the way for permanent pet-friendly policies on more of the airline’s domestic routes.
