Laser Incidents Reported Near Boston Logan Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after three separate flight crews reported being targeted by lasers while flying near Boston’s Logan International Airport on Monday evening. Crews from United Airlines Flight 2356, Southwest Airlines Flight 559, and Republic Airways Flight 4580 each reported encountering green lasers around two miles north of the airport at about 600 feet during departure. No injuries occurred, and flights continued as scheduled, but air traffic controllers warned other pilots of the hazard over radio.
This is not the first time Logan has seen laser-related incidents. In 2023, multiple planes reported similar strikes while landing. Nationally, laser attacks on aircraft have become a growing problem: the FAA recorded 13,304 incidents in 2023, 12,840 in 2024, and nearly 6,000 already in 2025. These numbers underscore the scale of a threat that is often misunderstood as a harmless prank.
According to the FAA, shining a laser at an aircraft can temporarily blind or disorient pilots, creating a serious safety risk for hundreds of passengers. It is also a federal crime. Individuals caught pointing lasers at planes face fines up to $32,646 per violation and potential criminal penalties of up to five years in prison plus a $250,000 fine.
Authorities urge the public to treat lasers as hazardous devices when aimed at aircraft and to report any suspicious activity. As investigations continue, the FAA and local law enforcement are working together to deter future incidents and hold violators accountable.
