IATA Presses Safety and Sustainability at ICAO Assembly

The International Air Transport Association is urging governments to adopt a unified approach to aviation safety, sustainability, and passenger protection as the 42nd Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization takes place in Montreal from September 23 to October 3, 2025. IATA has submitted 14 working papers calling on states to strengthen global standards and avoid fragmented rules that create confusion for travelers and unnecessary costs for airlines.

Central to its agenda is support for the industry’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. IATA is pressing governments to scale up production of sustainable aviation fuel through economic incentives and functioning markets, while keeping the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) as the sole global economic measure for emissions. The association is also warning against overlapping national taxes and premature mandates that could drive up fuel prices without boosting supply.

On consumer protection, IATA wants countries to align with ICAO’s Core Principles and establish common definitions of “extraordinary circumstances” to ensure consistent handling of disruptions across the aviation ecosystem.

Safety remains a key focus. IATA is calling for timely publication of accident reports to improve industry learning, stronger safeguards against GNSS jamming and spoofing, and protection of the 4.2–4.4 GHz radio spectrum vital for altimeters as 5G networks expand. It is also advocating more realistic timelines for aircraft mandates and a gradual increase of the pilot retirement age to 67 under strict medical oversight.

These priorities, IATA says, will help governments and airlines work together toward a safer, greener, and more resilient global aviation system.
