FAAN Confirms All Nigerian Airports Insured

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed that all airports under its management are fully insured, addressing recent concerns about safety and liability across the country’s aviation network.

FAAN’s managing director, Olubunmi Kuku, issued the clarification following comments by Overland Airways CEO Edward Boyo at the 5th CHINET Aviacargo Conference in Lagos. Boyo had alleged that Nigerian airports lacked insurance coverage, creating risks for airlines and passengers.

Kuku dismissed the claim, stating: “All Federal Government of Nigeria airports managed by FAAN are insured, with records up to date. De-rubberisation and runway hygiene have been maintained.” She added that FAAN continues to address wildlife hazards, including bird strikes, while carrying out repairs on runways with structural challenges or those that have exceeded their design lifespan.

Boyo had argued that while airlines, passengers, and luggage are typically insured, airports themselves have been neglected, pointing to deteriorating runways and inadequate wildlife control measures. He suggested that these issues forced airlines to shoulder unnecessary costs when damage occurred.

The aviation authority’s response comes at a time when safety concerns and infrastructure maintenance remain central topics in Nigeria’s aviation sector. FAAN emphasized that its insurance coverage is part of a broader commitment to ensure operational safety and compliance with international standards.

Overland Airways, which operates domestic and regional flights across Nigeria and West Africa, has not yet commented further on the issue. The carrier, founded in 2002, currently operates a fleet of ATR turboprops, Beechcraft 1900Ds, and Embraer E175s.
