Oceanwide Expeditions Upgrades m/v Ortelius for Greater Efficiency

Share

Oceanwide Expeditions, a veteran polar cruise operator and leader in expedition travel, has completed two major upgrade projects on the m/v Ortelius, enhancing the vessel’s speed, fuel efficiency, and sustainability performance. These improvements are part of the company’s long-term investment strategy in fleet modernization and environmental responsibility.

Increased Speed and Fuel Efficiency

During a drydocking period in September 2025, Oceanwide fitted four new bronze propeller blades, custom-built and installed by Dutch Propeller Repairs BV (DPR). The new blades replace the original stainless steel ones that had been in use for decades. Early sea trials and a transitional voyage to Puerto Madryn, Argentina, ahead of the 2025–2026 Antarctic season, have already shown improved propulsion performance and steadier cruising speeds.

The propeller upgrade follows a hull blasting project completed during another drydocking in May 2025. The hull was stripped of accumulated paint layers, restoring a smoother surface that reduces drag and boosts hydrodynamic efficiency. As a result, fuel consumption has been reduced, lowering both operational costs and the vessel’s carbon emissions—a key milestone in Oceanwide’s ESG and sustainability goals.

“With the completion of both projects, Ortelius is now more ready than ever to take guests into some of the planet’s most extreme environments,” said Piet Vink, Chief Vessel Officer at Oceanwide Expeditions. “These upgrades improve operational consistency and fuel efficiency, directly supporting our efforts to minimize emissions. We’re extremely pleased with the expertise of our partners, DPR and Shipyard Reimerswaal, in delivering exceptional results during busy docking periods.”

Comfort, Character, and Polar Capabilities

Originally built as a special-purpose research vessel, the m/v Ortelius is ice-strengthened and specifically designed for navigation in polar regions. The ship accommodates up to 108 guests and serves as a base for Oceanwide’s most remote itineraries, including Weddell Sea and Deep South Antarctic expeditions. With the ability to carry helicopters and offer 360° panoramic views, Ortelius is celebrated for its rugged capability and immersive expedition experience.

Both projects were completed at Shipyard Reimerswaal, Oceanwide’s long-time maintenance partner, which handles regular drydocking, refitting, and fleet upkeep. With these enhancements, the m/v Ortelius is set to deliver safer, faster, and more sustainable voyages for years to come—continuing Oceanwide’s legacy of innovation in polar exploration.
