The cruise industry is set for another record-breaking year, as AAA projects that 21.7 million Americans will take an ocean cruise in 2026 — the highest number ever recorded. If the forecast holds, it will mark the fourth consecutive year of record passenger growth for U.S. cruise travelers.

AAA expects 2025 to close with approximately 20.7 million American passengers, already surpassing earlier projections. The surge highlights a strong rebound in cruise travel, fueled by increased consumer confidence, diverse itineraries, and greater accessibility to global destinations.

“These numbers reflect the growing demand for ocean cruises among U.S. travelers,” said Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel. “Our travel advisors see it every day — from Caribbean getaways to Alaskan adventures, cruises offer unmatched variety, convenience, and memorable experiences.”

AAA’s forecast, created with Tourism Economics, uses data from Cruise IP, Oxford Economics, and key travel trends. The analysis considers global cruise schedules, economic forecasts, and tourism projections.

The demographic breakdown shows that 65 percent of U.S. cruise passengers are 55 and older, 27 percent fall between 35 and 54, and just 7 percent are under 35. Nearly half of travelers sail as couples, while 20 percent cruise with families and 7 percent travel solo.

The Caribbean remains the top destination for Americans, followed by the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Alaska cruises are also gaining traction, accounting for about 7 percent of projected U.S. passengers in 2026 as travelers seek new adventure and scenic exploration.
