Trip.com COO Xing Xiong: Why Passion Matters in the AI Travel Era

Trip.com Group chief operating officer Xing Xiong made a rare public appearance at WiT’s 20th anniversary conference, sharing candid thoughts on AI, collaboration and the future of travel. A technologist turned executive, Xiong has spent more than 26 years in travel, helping build the infrastructure behind one of the world’s largest online travel companies. Calm and reflective, he emphasized that while AI is transforming the industry, human passion and problem-solving remain irreplaceable.

Xiong described today’s AI momentum as both exciting and uncertain. “Trillions are being invested because people are afraid to be left behind,” he said. With limited resources, Trip.com’s focus is on “safe decisions” that deliver long-term value. Technology, he stressed, should always be used to solve real traveler problems instead of being adopted for its own sake.

He also pointed to the need for collaboration across airlines, OTAs and tech providers to improve data synchronization and fix the “invisible plumbing” of travel. True innovation, he said, comes from trust, shared incentives and putting travelers first.

On value creation and commercial pressure, Xiong was direct: “Don’t let the 1% commission distract from the 99% of what matters.” He sees Trip.com’s growth engine in Asia Pacific, driven by younger travelers and fast-rising demand. Inbound China travel is a key strategic priority.

As for AI, Xiong called it an enabler, not a replacement. “AI can’t replace passion,” he said. “The problems left for humans are harder and more valuable. Passion is our real asset.”
