Somali Airlines to Restart Operations by End of 2025

Somali Airlines is set to resume operations by the end of 2025 after a 34-year hiatus, according to the country’s Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Farah Nuh. Speaking at a press briefing in Mogadishu on October 27, Nuh confirmed that aircraft and equipment are ready for service, with preparations now in the final stages.

The Somali government announced in July 2025 that it had purchased two Airbus A320-200 aircraft for the relaunch of Somali Airlines, with plans to add up to three more aircraft by 2026 as part of a phased expansion. The planes were reportedly acquired from Lima Holding Group, though details of the lessor and aircraft identities have not been verified.

Somalia’s aviation revival follows the country’s 2023 milestone of regaining full control over the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (FIR) after more than 30 years. The airline’s relaunch aligns with a USD643 million infrastructure project to build a new international airport in Mahay, around 60 kilometers from Mogadishu, which will eventually replace Aden Adde International Airport.

The government is also modernizing existing aviation infrastructure, including upgrades to Aden Adde and regional airports. Out of Somalia’s 72 airstrips, 15 are currently under renovation.

Originally founded in 1964, Somali Airlines ceased operations in 1991 following the collapse of the central government. Its relaunch marks a major milestone in Somalia’s efforts to rebuild national institutions and restore the country’s aviation industry.
