Aurora Expeditions Adopts AI Navigation with CounterCurrent

Aurora Expeditions has announced a groundbreaking partnership with CounterCurrent, an Australian climate technology company, to bring Artificial Intelligence-powered navigation to its newest ship, the Douglas Mawson. This marks the first time a cruise line has integrated AI navigation technology through CounterCurrent’s innovative platform.
Launching in December 2025, the Douglas Mawson will feature a CounterCurrent sensor throughout the 2025–2026 Antarctic season. The system will collect real-time wind, wave, and ocean-current data from some of the planet’s most remote waters. The information will feed directly into global climate and weather models, enhancing forecasting accuracy and supporting safer, more efficient, and lower-emission navigation across the maritime sector.
CounterCurrent’s advanced onboard sensors allow ships to capture and transmit live oceanographic data, contributing to global scientific research. The initiative aligns with Aurora Expeditions’ mission as a Certified B Corporation committed to high environmental and social performance standards.
“Planning safe, efficient, and lower-emission shipping routes relies on accurate data and a deep understanding of ocean dynamics,” said Sasha Buch, Sustainability Manager at Aurora Expeditions. “Through our collaboration with CounterCurrent and the Polar Citizen Science Collective, we’re helping fill critical data gaps in the Southern Ocean—contributing to a smarter, cleaner future for maritime travel where every voyage improves the next.”
Aurora Expeditions continues to lead in sustainable exploration by combining cutting-edge AI technology with its ongoing commitment to climate science and responsible navigation.
