HX Expeditions Launches Electric Boats for Polar Exploration

HX Expeditions, the world’s first and longest-running expedition cruise company, has unveiled two new fully electric “silent science boats” designed to reduce underwater noise pollution and minimize environmental impact during polar voyages. The new MK 5 vessels, equipped with RAD Propulsion’s state-of-the-art RAD 40 electric drive system, will operate aboard MS Fram and the hybrid-battery-powered MS Fridtjof Nansen in the Arctic and Antarctic.
The electric boats will be used primarily by HX’s onboard science teams and guest scientists for research missions, as well as for passenger excursions that support hands-on science and wildlife observation. The initiative represents a major step in the company’s ongoing effort to replace traditional fuel-powered Zodiacs with cleaner, quieter alternatives.
“Sound pollution is one of the most underestimated environmental threats in the polar regions,” said Dr. Verena Meraldi, Chief Scientist at HX. “For marine life—especially whales—noise can mean the difference between thriving and struggling. With these silent boats added to our hybrid-electric ships, we’re reducing our environmental footprint while enhancing the experience for our guests and research teams.”
Marine scientist Dr. Ari Friedlaender, a long-time HX collaborator, added: “The silence of these new electric Zodiacs will completely transform how we study whales in Antarctica. They allow for closer, more natural observations with minimal disturbance—a true breakthrough for polar research.”
Complying with IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators) environmental and safety regulations, the vessels are designed for sustainable operations in sensitive ecosystems. HX Chief Operating Officer Iain McNeill emphasized that the move is part of a broader sustainability strategy: “These boats mark the beginning of a fleet-wide transition to fully electric operations, reducing acoustic interference and supporting responsible exploration across the HX fleet.”
Sam Pickering, Head of Products at RAD Propulsion, noted: “Our RAD 40 systems enable clean, quiet operations in some of the planet’s most fragile environments. Partnering with HX Expeditions demonstrates how advanced marine technology can power exploration while protecting the natural world.”
As HX Expeditions continues to expand its Citizen Science and wildlife research programs, the introduction of these electric boats reinforces its leadership in sustainable polar travel and scientific collaboration.
