United, Delta Cancel Flights After FAA Safety Directive

United Airlines and Delta Air Lines have begun cancelling flights following a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directive that ordered airlines to reduce operations at 40 of the nation’s busiest airports. The move, aimed at alleviating air traffic control workload and addressing safety concerns, is expected to affect thousands of passengers nationwide.
The FAA’s directive, issued amid ongoing staffing shortages and heightened safety oversight, requires carriers to scale back flight schedules to ensure safer and more manageable airspace operations. Both United and Delta confirmed they began implementing flight cancellations and schedule adjustments on Friday in compliance with the mandate.
The reductions primarily impact major hubs such as Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, and New York’s JFK and LaGuardia airports. The FAA said it will continue monitoring operational safety and may extend or adjust the directive depending on traffic volume and staffing capacity.
Airlines are advising passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport as disruptions may continue through the weekend.
