Indonesia has officially received its first Airbus A400M military transport aircraft, marking a major milestone in the country’s ongoing fleet modernization program. The aircraft, built by Airbus Defence and Space, was delivered during a ceremony at Halim Air Force Base in Jakarta on November 3, 2025.

The A400M, handed over at Airbus’s Seville facility earlier this year, will significantly enhance the Indonesian Air Force’s (TNI AU) tactical airlift and mission capabilities. Karl-Heinz Grossman, Head of International at Airbus Defence and Space, said the delivery “demonstrates the aircraft’s trusted multi-role capabilities in diverse and challenging environments.”

In addition to traditional transport duties, Indonesia plans to evaluate the integration of Airbus’s firefighting kit, which can convert the A400M into a water bomber capable of dropping up to 20,000 liters of retardant in a single pass. This new capability would strengthen the nation’s response to wildfires across its vast archipelago.

Designed for heavy cargo, troop transport, and humanitarian missions, the A400M can carry up to 37 tons and operate from short, unpaved runways. It can also perform aerial refueling operations, expanding the range and flexibility of Indonesia’s air operations.

Indonesia ordered two A400M aircraft in 2021. With the first now delivered and the second expected in 2026, the acquisition marks a significant leap forward in the modernization and readiness of the Indonesian Air Force.
