Airlines Shift From Data Silos to Actionable AI Insights

Airlines are accelerating their transition from fragmented data systems to integrated platforms that deliver real-time, AI-powered insights. What once revolved around eliminating data silos has evolved into a more complex challenge: ensuring that insights actually reach the employees who need them to make faster, smarter decisions.

British Airways chief information and digital officer Henning Krüger noted that data access is no longer the biggest barrier. Instead, airlines must bridge the gap between analytics teams and frontline users, empowering staff across operations to act on AI-driven recommendations. The goal, he said, is to democratize data so every employee—from crew schedulers to maintenance controllers—can make better decisions.

Air France-KLM SVP of information systems Ekbel Bouzgarrou echoed the sentiment, adding that dismantling silos across large airline groups is a long-term endeavor. She emphasized that strong data governance is essential for aligning technology investments with business objectives and operational performance.

Industry leaders from OAG and Infosys highlighted deeper challenges, including aging legacy systems and cultural resistance to change. While aviation has long been rich in data, Krüger said the sector must blend its deep operational expertise with modern digital mindsets to unlock AI’s full value.

Panelists agreed that airlines must first modernize core systems, improve data quality, and adopt more flexible architectures before scaling AI. Shorter innovation cycles, open platforms, and workforce buy-in are emerging as critical elements in building resilient, future-proof digital ecosystems.
