Apple Unveils New Digital ID Feature for U.S. Travelers

Apple is introducing a new digital ID feature that allows users to create an identity card in Apple Wallet using information from their U.S. passport. The rollout marks a major expansion of Apple’s digital identity efforts, giving travelers a more convenient and secure way to verify themselves at airports.

The feature will launch in beta at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 U.S. airports, where travelers can present their digital ID using an iPhone or Apple Watch. Apple emphasized that the digital ID is designed for domestic airport security only and cannot replace a physical passport for international travel or border crossings.

This update builds on Apple Wallet’s existing support for driver’s licenses and state IDs, which are currently available in 12 states and Puerto Rico. With the new passport-linked digital ID, Apple aims to broaden access and reduce the friction associated with traditional identity checks.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said the company is expanding digital identity tools with the same privacy and security standards built into its devices. Users can add their ID by scanning their passport information, allowing them to store all key identification documents securely on their phones.

Apple noted that digital ID data is fully encrypted and that it cannot see when, where, or how users present their ID. The company also hinted at additional use cases coming soon, as digital identity verification becomes increasingly central to travel and everyday transactions.

With digital IDs now tied to U.S. passport information, Apple is taking a major step toward a more seamless, mobile-first identity experience for millions of travelers.
