Ghana Accelerates Plans to Launch New National Airline

Ghana’s transport minister says a newly appointed 10-member taskforce is fast-tracking efforts to launch a new national carrier as the government aims to strengthen the country’s role as a regional aviation hub.

Speaking to the Business & Financial Times at a transport and logistics fair in Accra, Joseph Bukari Nikpe said the taskforce is currently developing the business model and management framework for the proposed airline. He emphasized that the new carrier must be competitive, financially sustainable and aligned with Ghana’s long-term economic objectives.

Nikpe noted that Ghana is well-positioned to capitalize on major infrastructure investments at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, as well as its strategic status as the “gateway to Africa.”

President John Mahama directed the formation of the taskforce in April to lead the development of the airline and oversee the steps needed to bring the project to fruition.

The renewed push comes after multiple unsuccessful attempts to revive a national carrier, including a recent proposal involving Ashanti Airlines and earlier discussions with Ethiopian Airlines and EgyptAir. Ghana has been without a functioning state airline since the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004 and its successor, Ghana International Airlines, which ceased operations in 2010.
